"Over and Under" was part of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art's celebration of a large addition and grand opening of their expanded galleries in 1985.
As one of the artists invited invited to create a window space installation, Hugh Margerum chose as his site a second story glass enclosed pedestrian bridge in the La Arcada Building next to the museum's new entrance.
Large flourescent shapes, and a variety of painted objects (chicken wire, tomato cages, etc.) were suspended from the ceiling of the structure, blown gently by osscilating fans and lit by twelve eight foot blacklight fixtures hidden from view.
The title refers to the fact that the installation floated overhead but gave the impression of an underwater abstract environment. While a presence and noticeable during the day, it was designed for viewing after the sun had set and could be seen most spectacularly at night.
